I grew up in the Charlotte area and am an alumna of UNC-Chapel Hill (go heels!). In addition to my professional work, I have a range of personal research experience, specializing in breaking down “brick walls” and navigating paper trails across the United States.
Wonderful photo of young ladies out and about! I think we tend to forget the sense of freedom that riding a bicycle gave people in the past. In the case of women, it took grace and coordination to ride a bike in long skirts.

Absolutely! And those hats and heels and corsets, too—I can’t imagine! Katharine’s brothers made bicycles, and she had access to a lot more freedom than many women did.

What year do you think the photo is from? I have a picture of some bicycles on my blog and was wondering what year. It is a fun photo.

Isn’t it great? It was taken sometime between 1893 and 1898 when Katharine was at college–I don’t know which school year, unfortunately.

It is neat they are related. If I understood that correctly?

Do you mean the women in the photo? They’re all college friends (Katharine only had brothers!), but I’m related to Katharine. She’s the woman standing second from the right.

Yes I meant that you are related to Katharine.
